Abita Christmas Ale

So, it's that time of year again.  Every brewery from coast to coast will drop some variation of Christmas or Holiday Ale of some sort.  Abita is no different.  I had this out at a local Gastropub on Staten Island called "Phunky Elephant", in replacement of my original order which was Abita's Pecan Harvest Ale.  The Pecan was apparently replaced for the Holiday's.

Whenever I drink anything Abita related I remember my last trip to New Orleans where the place is literally swimming in their Amber Ale.  I've always respected Abita and while I love their Andygator and Pecan Harvest, their Amber is kind of whatever to me and their Purple Haze is good but over rated by some stan-level devotees to it.

The Christmas Ale immediately struck me as made for the holidays.  It's as if someone took one of those decorated holiday wreathes, grinded it up and made beer out of the results.  It had a minty taste on first contact, but was sweeter as dranken.  It was stiff because of that over riding mint feel to it, but I liked it.  If it's a Christmas Ale why not go there?  Next thing we need is a Candy Cane Ale, this is a classy version of something that ridiculous.  It's described as a Dark, but I wouldn't let that scare you, I could see this being drank heavily and easily if that was the goal.

I liked it, I'd drink it again, Happy Holidays Abita.
